Orphée et Eurydice

directed by Gilbert Blin choreography by Anna Mansbridge conducted by Stephen Stubbs Aaron Sheehan Orphée Amanda Forsythe Eurydice Valerie Vinzant Amour Orpheus, the mythical singer, is the symbol of the power of music. At the untimely death of his beloved Eurydice he descends to the underworld on a heroic mission to bring her back to the land of the living. His impassioned singing wins her release, but he is then put to a test at which he, with his impetuous feelings, cannot succeed. Gluck’s Orfeo ed Eurydice was originally written for a castrato in the title role, but when he reshaped it for Paris he cast Orpheus as a high tenor, the traditional hero of French opera. We are extremely pleased to present tenor Aaron Sheehan, fresh from his GRAMMY-winning performance as Orphée in Charpentier’s opera, in his role-debut as Gluck’s Orphée! The new production will be directed by French director Gilbert Blin, celebrated opera director of the Boston Early Music Festival, with choreographer Anna Mansbridge and GRAMMY winning conductor Stephen Stubbs.

“Creative and beautiful projections (designed by Travis Mouffe) filled the back wall of the stage with arresting images that underscored the action. There were not only projected English translations, but also lines of French text from the libretto, which rolled onto the screen in ever-changing streams of color — breaking apart and re-forming in various shapes as the singers sang.
